The original Matthew Holgate was a quaker immigrant from England aboard the Rebecca in 1685, along with his daughter Mary. His wife was Sarah Sturgis, daughter of Anthony and Ann Sturgis, English Quakers who arrived in 1683.He was a member of the Marsden Friends Monthly Meeting in England. He settled in Roxborough, Philadelphia County, PA. He had a son Matthew Holgate who lived in Roxborough and died in 1770. His son John married Jane and died in 1778. John's oldest son was the Matthew Holgate who served as a colonel in the Phila. County Militia during the Rev. War.Matthew's Brothers, John, Cornelius, and William also served in that war. I am a descendent of William Holgate, who was born in Roxborough in 1762 and died in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, PA. in 1843.I would be glad to exchange information with anyone about the Holgate family (or Sturgis, Colflesh, Rodenboh, or Vaughan families either). My e-mail address is hagan@ehs.easternk12.nj.us Bill, I love it. It amazes me how families stay in the same areas for generations. I grew up in Upper Merion Twp. about a mile from the West Conshohocken line (on DeHaven Street). I spent my whole life until after college within a mile or so of my ancestors' homes in West Conshy and Lower Merion. Only I had no clue at the time who they were or anything else about them. Do you ever do any research at the Conshohocken Library? They have most of the old Conshohocken Recorders on microfilm. There's a lot of good stuff there. According to the letter of certification that Matthew Holgate brought with him from the Marsden Friends Monthly Meeting, Matthew Holgate was from Higham in the county of Lancaster in England. I've never actually looked this town up, but now my curiosity is aroused, so I'm going to have to see if I can locate it. The letter was signed by Isaac Ashton, in whose home the meetings were Holgate apparently held and William. I am going to assume that William Holgate was either Matthew's father or brother. I'm thinking that I'm not as computer-savvy as you seem to be. What exactly is a Holgate mailing list? Who are the subscribers and what are the benefits? What does it entail. Sorry if I sound clueless, but I am. As you know we got socked really badly by the storm and I have been off for the last two days, so I've been away from my computor. Where did you find the list of the "Rebecca" passengers? Was it from the book Passengers and Ships Prior to 1684, edited by Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr.? Who do you suppose James Holgate was (his name appears just above Matthew's)? I have a note that James Holgate was brought over as a servant for Richard Curetone, whose name appears near the top of the list. Do you think he was related to Matthew Holgate? I'm sure he must have been. What ever happened to him and his descendents? I found a Revolutionary War pension claim (R. 5135) for Cornelius Holgate filed by his widow Mary Holgate on 10 November 1838. At that time she was living in Chestnut Hill. She stated that Cornelius enlisted in 1776 and served in his brother Matthew's company. He fought in the Battles of Trenton (crossing the Delaware with Gen. Washington - under the command of Gen. Sullivan) Princeton and Germantown. He also claimed to have served in Captain Slaughter's company under Lt. Col. Levering and Colonel Daniel Heister. The claim also stated that he was born 27 January 1758 and married Mary Levering on 29 March 1781, at her father's house in Roxborough. Was her father Lt. Col. Levering? She was born 13 January 1755. He died 4 April 1828.Their children were as follows: John b.12 Mar. 1782 William b.28 Dec. 1783 d.14 Sept. 1805 Abraham b.19 Sept. 1785 d.30 Nov. 1786 Anna b.5 Jan. 1788 Jane b.27 Jul. 1789 Abraham b.1 Mar. 1791 Griffith b.2 Nov. 1792 Sarah b.20 Nov. 1794 Thomas b.9 Mar. 1796 d.12 Aug. 1797 Maria b.5 Dec. 1797 married Randall Fenton Susan b.21 Dec. 1800 A son-in-law, Israel Gilbert, was 49 years old in 1838 and living in Philadelphia County. Unfortunately, Mary Holgate's pension request was denied due to lack of documentation. I found this information at the David Library of the American Revolution in Washington's Crossing, PA. I don't know if you already knew all of the following. Hopefully there is something in there of value to you. Jack Hagan Would anyone on this list have the name of the wife of Matthew HOLGATE, Jr. In his will which was signed with his mark on Jan 5, 1770, he mentions wife, Mary, and children John and William (Executors), Sarah who m. MOIR, Mary who m. GRUBER, Elizabeth, and Margaret who m. COLLADAY. I have been searching for her maiden name for more years than I like to think. Thank you for any information you might want to share. Dorothy (Deege) Holgate The information concerning Matthew Holgate's letter of certification I found in "Colonial and Revolutionary Families - Pennsylvania", edited by Wilfred Jordan. Lewis Historical Publishing Company, inc. New York. 1945 pp. Vol. X pp.1-30. The article was about my Sturgis ancestors, who were related to the Holgates. Matthew Holgate married Sarah Sturgis, and Cornelius Sturgis's ancestor, Phillips Sturgis married Matthew Holgate's ancestor Angeline Rodenboh. The Holgate section is from p.13 to p.16. This volume can be found at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Sources cited (which I admit I haven't researched) were "Cope Copy Department of Records" 302 Arch Street, Philadelphia, shelf No. R.S. 358, p.36. "Will Book B", Philadelphia. Scharf and Westcott, Vol. I, p. 153. "Patent Book, Harrisburg", Vol. A, p.104, and recorded "Deed Book, Philadelphia H", Vol. 15, p.266. "Deed Book FTW," p.462. I have not been able to discover Matthew Holgate's wife's maiden name. I think that the Robert Holgate mentioned as a first purchaser could have been Matthew's brother or possibly his cousin. Here is my reasoning: Both Matthew and Robert were members of the Marsden Friends Monthly Meeting, so they were probably related. Besides Isaac Ashton, Matthew Holgate's letter of certification was also signed by a William Holgate. In the book, "The History of an Old Philadelphia Land Title: 208 South Fourth Street", by John Frederick Lewis, written in 1934, it is stated that Robert Holgate's father William was imprisoned in 1682 for holding a Quaker Meeting in his house. Thus I am supposing that William Holgate was either Matthew's father also, or possibly his uncle. There was also a James Holgate who came over on the "Rebecca" with Matthew Holgate as a servant for a Cureton family.I'll bet he was a brother also. If William Holgate was arrested in 1682, it makes sense that many of his sons would want to leave England for America. The only John Holgate I have information on was Matthew Holgate's grandson, son of Matthew Holgate, Jr. He married a woman named Jane (surname unknown) and thay had five children: Matthew, Samuel, John, Cornelius, and William. Jack Hagan Good Morning Holgate Cousins, I spent some time at the Pennsylvania Historical Society on Friday, and I found some records for the Lancashire Friends regarding the Marsden Meeting. Mary Holgate of Pendle - Wife of Matthew of the Forrest of Pendle Marsden Monthly Meeting Buriel: 29 12th month 1679 at Heyhead O.K., here is my interpretation. I am only guessing based on the preponderance of the evidence, but this is what I think. Maybe someone else can look at this information and come up with an alternative theory. I believe that William Holgate was the father of Matthew Holgate, and that Elizabeth, Frances, William, Robert, John, Mary and Ann were his brothers and sisters. Matthew's birth was not listed in the records, but that is because he probably was born in or before 1655. George Fox did not begin preaching Quakerism in Northwest England until the late 1650s, so Matthew was born before his father became a Quaker, and thus his birth would not be recorded in the Quaker records. Remember that Matthew's letter of certification from Marsden Meeting was signed by William Holgate. We know that William Holgate's son Robert (see births above) came to Philadelphia in 1682. We also know that that William Holgate was the founder of Twisden Meeting and several of the above records name him as William Holgate of Twisden Meeting. At least three of Matthew's descendents (a grandson, a great grandson, and a great great grandson) were named William, indicating to me that this was a common family name. The death listed in the records is undoubtedly the wife of our Matthew Holgate. She died in 1679. Assuming that she was probably at least 24 when she died (remember, she had a daughter when she died) she would have been born 1n 1655.If you check out the three marriages above those women married at ages 22, 24, and 36. So I doubt that Mary Holgate married much younger than that. If Matthew was the same age, he would have been born in that year also. Chances are they were older than that because matthew did not immediately remarry, so I'm assuming that the daughter was old enough for him to take care of on his own. The earliest marriage recorded above was 1680. Matthew was obviously married before that since his wife died in 1679. Sawley is a town in North Yorkshire, about 36 miles from Clitheroe, which seems to have been the center of the Marsden Meeting. There is also a Sawley in Lancashire, just over 3 miles from Clitheroe. At first I thought that this must be the Sawley where William Holgate lived. But the records kept making a point of emphasizing that the Sawley that William lived in was in Yorkshire, so I now think that that was true, and that they did that so people wouldn't make the assumption that I did, which is wrong. Grindleton, where Anne Holgate was married is also about three miles from Clitheroe. So, summing up; I believe that Matthew Holgate was born in Sawley, North Yorkshire in 1650 or earlier and that his father was William Holgate. William Holgate died sometime between 1685 (when he signed Matthew's certificate) and 1694 (when his daughter Anne married). His sister and brothers were as mentioned above. He lived in or near the Forest of Pendle, specifically in Higham. He was married to a woman named Mary and she died in 1679, leaving him with a daughter, also named Mary. Matthew and Mary emigrated to Philadelphia in 1785, where he later married Sarah Sturgis. Jack Hagan Hello List and great work Jack...... How about considering this as part of the Marsden Meeting scenario. You wrote: > DEATHS > 1. Deege Holgate In "The Hisstory of an Old Philadelphia Land Title", by John Frederick Lewis, 1934 it is written: It is recorded in the minutes of Marsden Monthly Meeting, Lancashire 12 mo. 16, 1681 that Robert Holgate, "Intends to sail for America" accordingly, 1 mo 16, 1682, a "certificate of removal" was granted him. Before his departure, he became a First Puprchaser from William Penn of 250 acres of land in Pensylvania. Then, it would seem, he crrossed the sea, preceding Penn to the Province, and 7 mo. 11.1682, procured from William Markham, the Deputy Governor and the Commissioners, a warrant which caused his land to be surveyed, the 25th of the same month, on the east bak of Neshaminy Creek in Bucks County. Was this Robert HOLGATE, relation to Matthew HOLGATE who arrived 1683? If so, what was that relationship? The Papers of William Penn on file in Harrisburg, PA, mention Robert and Roger HOLGATE owning land in PA as early as 1681. About 20 minutes before we were to leave, I found the above information....however, with a real lack of time and # of photocopies allowed, I photocopied only pgs. 1-7 of the early STURGIS family and pgs 14-15 of the HOLGATE info. > I have not been able to discover Matthew Holgate's wife's maiden name. I imagine that information is buried in a Monthly Meeting somewhere. Perhaps it could be found in the Swarthmore College library. I'm sure that you're correct in assuming that there is a connection between Robert and Matthew HOLGATE. The Penn Papers also mention a Roger HOLGATE in connection with Robert HOLGATE. I also have the info from "The History of an Old Philadelphia Land Title: 208 South Fourth Street" > There was also a James Holgate who came over on the "Rebecca" with > Matthew Holgate as a servant for a Cureton family. I have contacted descendants of the CURETON family. They say that Richard CURETON, b. ca 1632 near Grinshill, Shrophire, England, was a Quaker on his way to the Welsh Colony north of Merion, PA. It is said that he came from the Welsh border near Shrewsbury. The descendants had no information on James HOLGATE. In abstracting the PA Archives, I see that many of the STURGIS family lived in Upper Merion Twp, too. In "The Lives of Eminent Philadelphians, Now Deceased", by Henry Simpson, Philadelphia, 1859, it is written that Jacob HOLGATE, b 1767, was born at Chestnut Hill, Phila, PA "in the domicile of his ancestors". Jacob (4) was the son of William (3), of Matthew, Jr. (2) of Matthew, Sr., the immigrant. I don't know how many generations of his ancestors lived in that home, but have always searched for this family in the Chestnut Hill/back-part of Germantown. I was fortunate in finding an article published in the PA Genealogical Magazine, Vol XX, No 2, 1956, called "The Back Part of Germantown" which gives a little HOLGATE history, plus much history on the family of Elizabeth SHEITZ/ SHUTZ, wife of Jacob HOLGATE. Not to mention a treasure of information on many other families from Germantown. The article is 70 pages in length. Thank you for answering my query. Cornelius was born in 1670 and died on April 15, 1704 in Philadelphia. He is the son of Anthony and Ann Sturgis, and had 3 sons with his wife, Elizabetha. Here is the puzzle: Elizabetha Millard Sturgis is the daughter of Thomas Millard Sr. (I am still searching for her mother's name.) Elizabetha was born on September 11, 1672 in Huntspill, Sommerset, England, and her father was born approx.1642 in Warwickshire England. In researching the line of Thomas Millard Sr. with the help of a British researcher, I was just informed that she had indeed found the date of birth for Elizabetha (Elizabeth) as Sept.11, 1672, but she had also found a burial forsomeone she believed to be the same "Elizabeth Millard," born Sept.11, 1672 in Huntspill, but died Oct.1, 1672 at less than one month old. All I can deduct from this is that Elizabetha must have been one of a pair of twin daughters, since her marriageand the birth of her sons with Cornelius Sturgis is quite well documented in Pennsylvania and other genealogical data. Would you have any information or thoughts concerning this puzzzle? If so, would you please share your thoughts with me? Thanks so much, Anna Millard Rogers Matthew Holgate, according to EGLE's Notes and Queries... Fourth Series Volume I - Page 139 says (taken from CD19 by Broderbund, simple scans, no transcribing)... THE HOLGATE FAMILY. His son, Matthew Holgate, Jr., was born at Roxborough. The latter's son, John Holgate, Sr., was the father of Cornelius Holgate, b. at Roxborough, Jan. 24, 1758, and m. March 29, 1781, Mary Levering. Their son, Abraham Levering, was born March 1, 1791, at Roxborough, and m. Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Nathan and Abigail Clark Jones, of Pittsburg, Pa. Abby J. Millard Rogers of 166 I have that Corneilus Sturgis was the son of Anthony and Ann..Corneilus had John Sturgis b. 1698 & he married Mary Evans..they then had a Thomas Sturgis b. 8 Apr. 1723 and he married Catherine Roberts. Thom. b. 1723 and wife Catherine moved into Canada when they were elderly...with the Ellis family. They died there..around Mt. Pleasant or St. Thomas. Amos...a son of theirs moved there, also. He has a John Sturgis who founded Sturgis, Michigan. Now there were several other children born all along these lines. They are usually called the Philadelphia Sturgis group...also they came oringally from England. I have much information on them.
